My Review of "War at the Ice Cream Store" Books 1 and 2

📕 Book 1: Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli (Collector’s Edition)

The first installment kicks things off with a meaningful—and hilarious—bang. Bully Vanilli, the self-proclaimed king of the freezer, has made Mustachio Pistachio his punching bag. The bullying finally goes too far when Mustachio is kicked out of his bucket and SPLATS on the freezer floor. But don’t count him out! This new Collector’s Edition features reimagined illustrations and bonus content that really elevate the story. It tackles bullying, kindness, and standing up for yourself in a way that’s digestible (pun fully intended) for kids.

What Stands Out:

  • The message is powerful, yet wrapped in ice-cream humor.

  • The illustrations pop with personality.

  • There's even a catchy song—perfect for classroom fun or home read-alouds.

This is more than a silly dessert story. It's a clever vehicle for helping kids talk about difficult topics like being left out or dealing with bullies—without being heavy-handed.

📘 Book 2: Rocky Road vs The Sundae Storm

Just when you think the freezer drama has cooled down, Cheryl DaVeiga whips up a second serving of sweet chaos. In War at the Ice Cream Store 2, the real threat isn’t a bully—it’s a category-five Sundae Storm that’s threatening to ruin the most important ice cream day of the year! A twirly, swirly whirlwind rips through the Frozen Frogg Ice Cream Store, and only teamwork and creativity will save the day.

Where book one leans into personal conflict, this sequel spotlights teamwork, quick thinking, and the importance of working together despite differences. Rocky Road takes the lead, and the rest of the flavors and toppings rally to face the storm with some fun surprises along the way.

Why It Works:

  • The stakes are higher, but the tone stays light.

  • The fast-paced rhyme and alliteration are irresistible.

  • It’s packed with action and giggle-worthy moments that encourage kids to think critically and work cooperatively.

🎨 A Feast for the Eyes

Both books are gorgeously illustrated, with each character drawn in expressive, larger-than-life style. Kids will love pointing out details, tracing the paths of flying sprinkles, and recognizing their favorite flavors. From Mustachio’s lonely bucket to the chaos of the Sundae Storm, the visuals pull young readers into the story in a way that makes it ideal for both independent exploration and cozy lap-reading.

🎶 Read-Aloud Gold

The rhythmic, rhyming text in both books makes them perfect read-alouds. There’s musicality in every page turn, and in Book 1, the addition of a real song just adds to the fun. These books belong in classrooms, libraries, and bedtime stacks everywhere.

🍨 Scoop-Worthy Messages for Little Minds

Across both stories, Cheryl DaVeiga does an excellent job balancing entertainment with emotional intelligence. Whether it’s learning to stand up for yourself or how to unite during a crisis, each story reinforces kid-friendly social lessons in a way that’s lighthearted but lasting.

Themes Across the Series:

  • Book 1: Bullying, courage, kindness

  • Book 2: Teamwork, problem-solving, community

  • Both: Humor, resilience, friendship

🧁 Final Thoughts: A Two-Scoop Treat for Young Readers

The War at the Ice Cream Store series delivers double the fun, double the flavor, and double the heart. Cheryl DaVeiga has created a freezer-aisle fantasy full of lessons, laughter, and lovable characters that kids will crave again and again.

If you're looking for vibrant picture books that combine moral messages with high-energy storytelling, this series is a must-have.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Five stars, with sprinkles on top!
