Why did you choose Southport, NC for your story setting?
I was going through some personal difficulties, struggling to find gratitude each day. My siblings are a huge part of my life, but I rarely see them because we live in different states. I decided I needed to take a trip to visit, and I did. Spending time surrounded by the comfort and love of my brother and sister was exactly what I needed to get back on track. Enjoying the beautiful weather and the small town of Southport, NC catapulted me into the story. I couldn’t move my fingers fast enough to get the words down on the page. I was sitting at a picnic table on the water and whipped out an outline and feverishly developed characters and plot lines. It was exhilarating.
What I didn’t know when I started was how special and unique Southport, NC is. Going down the rabbit hole to learn everything I could about the town opened my eyes to the wonder and beauty of the quaint beach town. I wanted my story to capture the essence of Southport and the healing it provided me during my trip.
Everyone should have someone they can lean on to lift their spirits and show them they have the strength to get through anything. In Call Her Janie, Lizzie leans on her brother and Helen to lift her up and find her way again. I hope you enjoyed reading Call Her Janie as much as I enjoyed writing it.
