Leprechaun Myth and More...

by Richard Lopez

The story of the leprechaun is said to be that If you catch one of them, they will grant you three wishes and give you their pot of gold. They have been associated with the luck of the Irish which is why they remain so popular today.

In my research for my book Looking for a Leprechaun I found that there is no evidence of there being a female leprechaun. Fairies would be the closest thing to a female leprechaun. A leprechaun is generally considered to be lucky, harmless, and a bit mischievous.

There are many mythical creatures that have similar characteristics to leprechauns. Was Rumpelstiltskin a leprechaun? I don’t believe he was a leprechaun, but had similar features. Goblins, Hobgoblins, and even the Clurichauns are often mistaken as leprechauns. Clurichauns are considered leprechauns drunken cousin.

Patrick Begorra is a known fairy tale leprechaun. Little man of Disneyland told the tale of a happy leprechaun named Patrick Begorra. Patrick lived in an Orange Grove in Anaheim, California. One day several Disney characters came to his home to scope out the area for Disneyland. Patrick objected, so they took him back to the Disney studios to show him the plans. Patrick agreed to let Walt build Disneyland on his property as long as Disney provided a little house for him forever. So, when you visit Disneyland keep your eyes wide open. Maybe you will see Patrick the leprechaun and follow him home to see where he lives.

Thank you for this history of the leprechaun and other mythical figures, which are similar to the leprechaun. Learn more about Richard Lopez's book below, read my review, and enter the giveaway!
